The Black Arts Retreat Emerging Artist Scholarship covers the costs of flight and retreat registration fees, including excursions, meals, accommodation and lodging, for one awardee to attend Black Arts Retreat Kenya. The Emerging Artist Scholarship will be awarded to one artist between ages 21 - 26 who exhibits both creative prowess in their medium of choice and a commitment to community service. To apply, complete the form below which includes a series of questions and a submission of creative work. Applications will be accepted until September 1st, 2022. Emerging Artist Scholarship recipient will be notified by October 1st 2022. This opportunity is open to applicants who primarily reside in and hold passports from the US, Canada, The Caribbean or Kenya.
PLEASE NOTE: Black Arts Retreat honors unity, cooperation and reciprocity. The recipient of the BAR Emerging Artist Scholarship will be required to assist with BAR programming, outreach and/or development activities for one year following the retreat, until December 2023. This support can be virtual and/or in person. The breakdown of responsibilities will be determined upon the selection of the winner, within the range of their skillset and will not excess 5 hours per week on average.
ABOUT THE PROCESS: Application responses and creative work submissions will be reviewed by the BAR Kenya Scholarship committee who will then make a selection of up to 10 semi-finalists. Semi-finalists will be featured in a virtual showcase in which the public and BAR community will be invited to vote on submissions and contribute to the final Scholarship Winner selection.
